A light that makes nets visible to marine life

Fishers don't want turtles either, so we're building a cheap light that keeps them out.

A sea turtle tangled in a fishing net just below the surface

A gillnet catches everything

Turtles can't see it, get tangled and drown. Our research on bycatch quantification

How it works

Cutaway of the NOCATCH light on a net rope. A magnet slides through a copper coil and the green LED flashes each time it passes. NS Magnet and coil Green LED Clamp for the 4 mm net rope

Questions

What is NOCATCH?

A wave-powered green light that helps turtles, sharks and rays avoid gillnets.

Do I get a NOCATCH light?

Only with the Founding Unit, which includes one from the first production run.

How much is shipping?

You pay 60% of the estimate after the campaign, and we cover the rest.

What's the puzzle add-on?

A $29 NOCATCH puzzle you can add to any reward, and you pay its shipping.

Why green?

Turtles, sharks and rays see green well, but most target fish don't react.

Why would a fisher use it?

Bycatch wrecks nets, and lit nets kept the same catch in trials.

When will the lights go on nets?

After the ocean test and pilot, aiming for 5,000 lights by May 2027.

What if a test goes badly?

We'll post it here, fix the design and test again.

Is my pledge tax-deductible?

Nope, a pledge pays for a reward, so it isn't tax-deductible.
